Online individual therapy for gay men

Therapy for body image and self-worth

You’d like to go swimming. By the time you’ve thought about taking your shirt off in front of everyone, staying home feels easier. Or you go, enjoy the afternoon, and spend that evening looking at one photo of yourself. Everyone else remembers a good day. You remember how you looked sitting down.

Ageing can bring a different version of this. You might feel quite comfortable with your body until you walk into a bar where you used to get attention. Then you spend the evening wondering who has noticed you. I’d want to know what that attention meant to you, and what it’s like when it changes.

Working with me

The photograph you asked him to delete

Say your partner takes a picture on holiday. He likes it because you look happy. You ask him to delete it. He tells you that you look fine, and that somehow makes the conversation harder.

I’d be interested in what you saw when you looked at that photograph. Were you worried about him posting it? Did you feel embarrassed in front of a man who already sees you undressed? Perhaps you simply wanted a say in which pictures of you other people get to see. We can take your answer seriously without debating whether it was a flattering picture.

If eating or exercise has become hard to control, tell me in the first session, because some situations need medical support alongside therapy.

Your question

Will it sound vain to talk about how I look?

You can tell me about the invitation you turned down or the date you put off. If how you feel about your body is changing what you let yourself do, there’s plenty for us to talk about.

More questions

Why do gay men struggle with body image?

Research finds gay men report more body dissatisfaction than straight men on average. Dating apps, a strong emphasis on looks in parts of gay culture and the pressure to be desirable all play a part. So can older experiences of feeling different or not measuring up.

Can therapy help with body dysmorphia?

Body dysmorphic disorder is a specific condition that needs a proper assessment. If that is a question for you, raise it in the first session and speak to your GP or doctor too. I’ll be honest about whether what I offer fits, and when specialist help would be better.

Can I talk about ageing and how my body is changing?

Yes. Getting older, illness and changes in health can all alter how you feel about your body and how visible you feel. Those are as much a part of body image as the gym.
