Social Networking is a Global Phenomenon

May people think that social media is an international affair, predominantly the domain of the U.S. However, the reality is that social media is a global phenomenon occurring across all markets irrespective of wider economic, cultural or social development. And there’s proof.

According to ComScore, social networking sites grew only 9 percent from June 2007 in the U.S. and in Canada, whereas in Asia it grew 23 percent, in Latin America 33 percent, in Europe 35 percent, and a massive 66 percent in the Middle East and Africa.

Facebook is still reported to be the fastest-growing site, with a 153 percent increase in unique visitors, most of which was international growth.  Hi5 grew 100 percent, Friendster grew 50 percent, Google’s Orkut grew 41 percent and AOL’s Bebo grew 32 percent. France-based Skyrock, grew 19 percent.
